Dear 8th grade Parents and Guardians,
My ELA classes are going to be reading the novel Monster, by Walter Dean Myers for the next few weeks.
This novel is on the LISD approved reading list, however, due to some mature content, I wanted to notify you to ensure the understanding of the book’s material.
The book narrates the life of a 16-year-old boy on trial for murder. In the form of a screenplay, a few of his journal entries vaguely reference life in jail, which includes violence against other inmates as well as a brief reference to sexual assault. While these are not vivid enough to be inappropriate, the content will require maturity from our students.
LISD strategic design includes challenging our students everyday in a safe and nurturing environment, and choosing and creating innovative lessons that engage our students. Monster is a book that will teach about the judicial system and force the students to think critically.
I truly appreciate you taking the time to read this, and as always, if you have any questions, please feel free to call or email.
Sincerely,
Kelsie Porter
