Dear 8th grade Parents and Guardians,

My ELA classes are going to be reading the novel Monster, by Walter Dean Myers for the next few weeks.
This novel is on the LISD approved reading list, however, due to some mature content, I wanted to notify you to ensure the understanding of the book’s material.
The book narrates the life of a 16-year-old boy on trial for murder.  In the form of a screenplay, a few of his journal entries vaguely reference life in jail, which includes violence against other inmates as well as a brief reference to sexual assault.  While these are not vivid enough to be inappropriate, the content will require maturity from our students.
LISD strategic design includes challenging our students everyday in a safe and nurturing environment, and choosing and creating innovative lessons that engage our students.  Monster is a book that will teach about the judicial system and force the students to think critically.

I truly appreciate you taking the time to read this, and as always, if you have any questions, please feel free to call or email.

                                                      Sincerely,
                                                                Kelsie Porter

We spent Monday 1/13 and Tuesday 1/14 going over the semester review.  I gave all students with an opportunity to earn 5 bonus points by turning in their completed review by Wednesday 1/15.  Furthermore, I provided all students with a small index card that they could use to put any information they felt could aid them on the exam (They could also use it during the exam)  Because of this, all grades on the exams are final.

I hope to make the second half of the year even better than the first! Please email or call me if you have any questions or concerns. Have a fabulous long weekend!

Students and parents, be sure to subscribe to your class for Remind 101.  This application allows me to send out text message alerts about any important information regarding classwork, or announcements.

In an effort to build relationships between myself and the students, I allowed each class to come up with a "team name" for this application.  So the names are fun and different! The 2/3 period block decided on Remind126 as their team name, 4/5 period block decided on FindingNemo, and the 7/8 period block decided to name their class RobotUnicorn.

It was a little silly, but we had fun doing it! In order to subscribe to your class, text the number 469-502-7952, and write your specific class text code as the message.

For study hall, text @stuhall126
For 2/3 block text, @remind12
For 4/5 block text, @8thELApap
For 7/8 block text @robouni

PARENTS! If you would like to receive the same remind101 messages as your students, then text the number 469-502-7952, with the message @parents 126
